Using What Your Momma Gave You
Written by Ellen Zimmerman
Most of your students probably have a cell phone that their momma (or dad) gave them. So why do we act like it's a dangerous weapon that they aren't supposed to have at school?! Get approval from your principal first, but make use of those cameras and video recorders in your classroom! Start by telling your students to check with their parents or to make sure they won't be billed extra fees if they send pic or videos to your e-mail address. Have students gather pictures for a specific project or videos of brief interviews. (Short video segments are best anyway to keep interest.) The student can e-mail the pic or vid to you using their name for the subject. They just enter the e-mail address instead of a contact number. (You can create a separate Google or other account if you don't want to mix this with your everyday e-mail.)When you receive the videos and pictures you have several options but I recommend using a flash, jump or whatever drive to let the students load them on their computers to create a Movie Maker, iMovie, PhotoStory or even just use word processing or presentation software report. While most new phones have really good quality media, the key is to keep the size of the photo or video relatively small so they do not distort.
If file formats become an issue, there are options to convert from the cell phone formats. The first time I had my students do a project this way, the topic was "Reasons to Use a Cell Phone in School".
