Free Thought Mapping Software
Written by Ellen Zimmerman
While some schools may have funding for excellent software that creates thought maps for assignments, you can still create some excellent thought maps using freeware. (No cost, no trial period, really free.) CMap Tools is an excellent option for classroom use. It works very much like the more expensive options and is easy to learn. Even if you haven't had the opportunity to learn the software first, your students will be able to help you learn if you'll just turn them lose with it. The software can be used by all ages and lets you add images also. CMap is available for several operating systems.Lesson ideas:
ELA - students can create character descriptions, chapter summaries from books, planning for a project by group member, word pictures and definitions.
MATH - examples of problems by unit, picture problems for young students, formula summaries and shape examples and definitions.
SCIENCE - genetic trait mapping, ecosystem layouts, animal descriptions.
SOCIAL STUDIES - immigration patterns, timelines, characteristics of regions.
